What to Expect Before and After Botox Q&A
Botox is a treatment that is safe and effective and can give you a more youthful and revitalized appearance. Botox reduces wrinkles and fine lines, making the face appear younger and more refreshed. It is crucial to speak with a qualified doctor before getting Botox who can help with your medical history, assess your goals, and prescribe the most effective treatment. After the treatment, results typically start to show up within a few days and can last for several months. Follow-up treatment may be required to maintain the results. At Midwest Dermatology Centre, Dr. Melinda Woofter, our board-certified dermatologist, creates a customized treatment plan to help bring out your aesthetic beauty. Our faces are one of the very first places that will start to undergo the visible effects of aging but are also one of the first things others will see when meeting us. Even in our 30s, fine lines and wrinkles can start to develop between our eyebrows, around our eyes, horizontally across our foreheads, and around our mouths, making us appear older than we feel. Botox is the leading brand available on the market today for its effectiveness in reducing the appearance of aging on our skin and providing beautifully smooth and natural results that will reverse the visible signs of aging in our faces.
Generally speaking, Botox injections will last around 3 to 4 months, but several factors can influence the longevity of the results. Some patients will notice that they metabolize Botox a bit faster than average, in which case their results may only last closer to 2 to 3 months, while others have noted that their injections can provide results for closer to 4 to 6 months. Athletes or those with a very good metabolism will likely notice that their results last on the shorter end, though sometimes it is purely genetic. It is common for patients to notice after multiple treatments that their results last a bit longer than after the initial treatment.
Anyone over the age of 18 who is deemed a good fit by the health care provider can start receiving Botox injections, though it is more common for people to start preventative Botox treatments in their mid-to late-20s or early 30s. Starting treatments before full-blown wrinkles have developed is highly recommended to ensure that the process of aging is significantly slowed down before it even starts. It is recommended that most people start Botox treatments before the age of 35, as creasing and fine lines may become trickier and more expensive to treat after significant development, though treatment is common for anyone aged 25 to 50 years old. The average age to start Botox treatments is in the early 30s, as patients start to notice the effects of aging on their faces and wish to reverse those effects before they become very noticeable to others.
There are many factors that we may face daily that will cause our skin to age and that will also cause the results from Botox injections to diminish at a faster rate. It is recommended that those who wish to prolong the appearance of youthful, smooth skin or wish to get the most out of their Botox injections avoid the following:
– Smoking and ingesting nicotine
– Sun exposure without proper protection
– High levels of stress (if possible)
– High-intensity workouts
– Excessive heat (immediately following treatment)
– Consuming heavily processed or fatty foods
In addition to avoiding all of the above as much as possible, it is important to maintain a quality skincare routine that will keep your skin properly hydrated. Studies have shown that taking zinc supplements can also help achieve the results provided by Botox.
On average, results from Botox injections will take around 3 to 4 days before they start to develop and become visible, but it will take closer to 10 to 14 days before the final results will take effect. When the treatment starts to take effect, you may notice that the skin starts to feel a little tighter, and you will be able to feel the effects of the treatment if you make exaggerated facial expressions using the muscles that received the Botox. Botox requires 14 days for the full effects to take place because it is a neuromuscular blocking agent, which takes that amount of time to reach the nerve at the cellular level, causing it to be paralyzed. This timeline has a bit of variation from patient to patient, primarily because of differences in muscle thickness. The finer the lines that are being treated by Botox, the sooner you are likely to reach the full effects provided by Botox.
