What is scalp psoriasis?

Psoriasis occurs when skin cells build up to form itchy, dry, scaly skin. When it appears on the scalp or extend just beyond the scalp, it is called scalp psoriasis. It can also extend down to the neck, even appear behind the ears. Treatment of the scalp can be difficult as the skin at the scalp is thicker, and hair can often get in the way.

What are the symptoms and signs of scalp psoriasis?

This condition can appear anywhere on the scalp and sometimes appears as small patches. Unfortunately, it can be challenging to find because it hides under hair. When it develops, you may notice red patches that can be thick or inflamed. Dandruff-like flaking can occur. However, it is a little different than actual dandruff. Scalp psoriasis will cause a silvery sheen to develop, unlike dandruff. The scalp also may become so dry it will crack and begin to bleed.

What causes scalp psoriasis?

Scalp psoriasis is very common. It occurs when a person’s immune system triggers the skin to grow too fast. New cells are produced in days rather than weeks. As the skin begins to pile up, the body can’t shed it fast enough and patches of psoriasis form.

How do you treat scalp psoriasis?

There are many effective treatments available to treat the symptoms, such as medicated shampoo or other solutions. Many of these treatments are available without a prescription.

– Medicine applied to the scalp.
– Medicated shampoos.
– Scale softeners.
– Injections
– Light treatments.
– Biologics and other medicines that work throughout the body.

What is dandruff, and how do you treat it?

Dandruff is white flakes of skin that often appear on your shoulders. While it can be embarrassing or itchy, it is harmless. Dandruff is similar to scalp psoriasis but isn’t as severe. Dandruff appears when skin cells are growing and dying off too fast. In some cases, a fungus called Malassezia may contribute to this. In many cases, this fungus doesn’t affect your scalp, but it can sometimes, causing your immune system to overreact. This over action jump starts your skin cells to grow faster, causing dandruff.

In many cases, you can get over the counter treatments to treat your dandruff. For severe cases of dandruff, come to our clinic and get evaluated by our providers.
