How can I prevent a plantar wart?
We understand that foot health is a vital component of your overall well-being. One common condition we frequently see in our practice is plantar warts, benign skin growths caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). Plantar warts often present as hard, grainy growths in areas of your foot subjected to constant pressure, such as the heels or balls of the feet. Because of the weight-bearing nature of these areas, plantar warts can grow inward beneath thickened skin, potentially causing discomfort or pain during everyday activities like walking or standing.
We offer personalized treatment options tailored to your needs, considering factors such as the wart’s severity, location, and your individual preferences. Common treatments at our practice include topical medications, laser therapy, or minor surgical removal. While plantar warts may occasionally resolve spontaneously, this process can take months or even years, and appropriate medical intervention often alleviates symptoms more quickly.
We are dedicated to providing thorough, compassionate care for your foot-related concerns. If you suspect you may have a plantar wart or have any questions about foot care and prevention, please contact us to schedule an appointment. Our team is here to help you achieve optimal foot health and overall wellness.
If you’re experiencing uncomfortable plantar warts, our team at Midwest Dermatology Centre is here to help you. When plantar warts are left untreated, they can persist for months or even years, often becoming increasingly uncomfortable or painful. Over time, the wart may grow larger or multiply, spreading to nearby areas of the foot and sometimes forming clusters known as mosaic warts. This can make walking or standing difficult and painful, particularly if the wart develops in pressure-bearing areas of your foot.
Additionally, untreated plantar warts can negatively impact your foot mechanics, leading to altered gait patterns. This may result in discomfort or pain in your legs, knees, or hips due to shifts in posture and walking habits. While plantar warts are generally benign, neglecting treatment can increase the risk of spreading the infection to others, especially in shared spaces such as locker rooms, communal showers, or swimming pools.
Individuals with compromised immune systems or conditions like diabetes may experience more persistent or severe wart infections, making prompt medical attention particularly important. At Midwest Dermatology Centre, our healthcare professionals are ready to evaluate and provide effective treatment options tailored to your needs. Although some plantar warts may resolve spontaneously, we recommend consulting our experienced providers early to avoid potential complications and ensure your continued comfort and wellness.
As previously mentioned, plantar warts are caused by the HPV virus which is an infection in the outer layer of your skin on the soles of your feet. Only a few of these viruses however, can cause warts on the feet. Other types of the HPV virus are more likely to cause warts on other areas of your skin or mucous membranes than your feet.
Each individual will respond differently to the HPV virus, not everyone who comes into contact with the virus will develop plantar warts. Even individuals in the same family may react to the virus differently.
The HPV virus strain that causes plantar warts is not highly contagious compared to other warts, so the virus cannot be easily transmitted by direct contact from one to another. It does thrive and live in warm, moist environments like showers, pools, or locker rooms.
Symptoms of plantar warts may include:
• Small, fleshy, rough, or grainy growths on the bottom of your feet, usually located at the base of the toes or forefoot of the heel
• Hard, thick skin over a well-defined area on the skin, here a wart can grow inward
• Black points that may look like seeds but are small, clotted blood vessels on your feet
• Lesions that can interrupt the normal lines and ridges in the skin of your feet
• Pain or tenderness may be felt when walking or standing
To help prevent or reduce your risk of plantar warts, you can:
• Avoid direct contact with warts by washing your hands and feet carefully if you come into contact with a wart
• Keeping your feet clean and dry consistently and changing your shoes and socks each day
• Avoid walking barefoot around locker rooms and swimming pools. Instead, wear pool shoes or slippers into the areas
• Don’t pick or scratch at warts if you have one
• Do not use the same pumice stone or nail clipper on your warts as you will use these same items on your healthy skin and nails
To prevent plantar warts, it’s important to avoid direct contact with the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes the condition. Wear shoes in public places like pools, locker rooms, and communal showers to reduce exposure. Keep your feet clean and dry, and avoid picking at or scratching warts to prevent spreading. Additionally, consider using a separate towel for your feet to minimize the risk of infection. Regularly inspecting your feet for any changes can help catch warts early before they spread.
